CULTURAL COMPETENCE SERIES

Inclusion Starts With I
The journey to becoming culturally intelligent is a personal and individual one, even when the journey is started through a professional affiliation. In Inclusion Starts with I, participants are taken through the 8 steps of inclusion, as defined by author Mary Frances Winters. It is an introspective activity to aid each person in intentionally being aware of who they are, what they value about themselves and others, the ways they include and exclude others, their biases (we all have them), and why being open to change benefits them and others. Additionally, the concept of emotional intelligence is discussed as a pivotal part of each person’s cultural competence journey. Companies are made up of individuals. Therefore, it is each person’s thoughts, intentions and behaviors that create the organizational environment.

Cultural Competence: A Business Case
In this session we dive into the bottom line of organizational importance for workplace cultural competency. With the changing demographics in our global society and more complex generations entering the workplace, companies that embrace cultural competence; in values, policies and actions; establish themselves as employers of choice, good partners to do business with, community conscious, as well as more innovative. All of which shore up the company’s ability to sustain itself and thrive in new markets. Simply put, cultural competence is good for business.

Blind Spots: Unconscious Bias
We all have biases. This is a fact. Some biases we are aware of and others we are not. In this session we become self-aware of those biases we may not have realized we have, as well as look at the assumptions and prejudices we know we have; and note how they show up in our behaviors, to acknowledge them and to shift from them with intentionality. We will discuss and define micro-advantages, micro-aggressions, micro-inequities, and stereotyping all from a lens of being aware of our behaviors. This session is not about condemning. Rather it is about being reflective, thoughtful, and intentional about our words and actions to positively impact the bottom line.

Common Grounds: Courageous Conversations
There are many topics that are considered "off limits" in the workplace or just too controversial to discuss. The challenges is these conversations are still happening without a clear construct for them to be productive. The more these conversations are avoided, the greater the anxiety grows around it. In this session we provide tangible steps to having these conversations with compassion, curiosity, collaboration, critical thinking, and courage.

Generations in the Workplace
Research has shown that the historic and societal events which occurred in the generation we were born in helped shape us during our most influential early stages of development. In Working Across Generations, we look at how we became who we are today and how our generational traits can be seen in our interactions. Gaining knowledge of these characteristics and traits, within and across generations, can aid us in creating more inclusive environments that help us reach our common goals with less conflict, misunderstanding, and miscommunication, and thereby brings a wealth of experiences to the table.
